4 Key Participants in Projects

To achieve the requirements set forth in each project, we depend to the integration of many organizations and people towards a common objective: The Project Objective. To succeed and exceed the expectations of key stakeholders, we first need to identify who they are.

We will define as involved or participants the organizations and people that will be affected or benefited by the development of the project. For example, in a residence, we consider the client and his family to be key stakeholders, plus the architect, builders, neighbors, government agencies, advisors and service companies, among others.

We define the following key participants in projects:

Members of the Management Team

Customer

It is the contractor, owner or developer of the project who:

  • Authorize.
  • Define the scope.
  • Establishes guidelines and acceptance criteria.

Sponsor

It is the person in charge of project management in the company who:

  • Ensure timely decision making.
  • Supports resource allocation.
  • Overcome conflicts and organizational barriers.
  • Assigns and supports the Project Manager.
  • Provides strategic direction to the Project Manager.

Execution Team Members

Project manager

It is the person in charge of the project who:

  • Leads the project team to achieve the objectives.
  • Ensures effective communication between management and other organizations.
  • Ensures that project issues are identified, resolved on time and appropriately.

Team members

They are key participants such as the Manager, the suppliers, the organizers and the staff who:

  • They prepare the Project Plan.
  • They execute and control following the Plan.
  • They collaborate in the integration of the teams to achieve the objectives of the project.

When the project involves a company, the Client is made up of various departments including the upper management and owners. To support the work of the Project Manager, within the management team we establish the figure of the Sponsor, who has the authority and influence to overcome conflicts and organizational barriers in favor of a better achievement of the project. The Manager, without the support of the Sponsor, has a more complex job because he needs to negotiate with different management entities of the Client's organization.

Besides the management team is made up of the Client, contractor, owner or developer of the project plus the Sponsor who is in charge of the strategic direction of the project within the company. On the other hand, the executing team is made up of the Project Manager as the person in charge, and the members of the team, which include: organizations, staff, contractors, suppliers and advisors.
